The Expressive Writing Workshop
A guided writing experience that helps teams slow down, find clarity, and reconnect with what's in their control.

Your team is lost and anxious in these times of global uncertainty.
We are living through an era of heightened uncertainty, marked by unprecedented geopolitical disorder, the advance of AI, and the quiet erosion of meaning at work. Most professionals are facing job insecurity and pressure to adapt, all the while feeling disconnected from what actually matters to them.

The result? Stagnation at work, disconnection, decision paralysis, and a growing sense of dread over global events beyond their control.

The Expressive Writing Workshop is a structured, research-backed practice that helps participants reconnect with who they are and what they can control, fostering clarity, resilience, and their own authentic voice.
The Science Behind Expressive Writing

Expressive writing isn't journaling.  It's a research-backed, structured technique that helps people process emotional upheaval. It was developed by psychologist James Pennebaker at UT Austin and detailed in his book, Opening Up by Writing It Down. Over 200 published studies show its measurable benefits:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved emotional processing and resilience
  • Greater clarity in decision-making
  • Stronger immune function and physical health
  • Deeper sense of meaning and self-awareness

Pennebaker's research shows the strongest results when people write about their most challenging experiences, which is exactly what The Expressive Writing Workshop is designed to do.

What to Expect
Each workshop is a 60–90 minute guided experience. Here's how it works:

Guided meditation
We begin by slowing down. A short meditation helps participants arrive fully, stepping out of their inboxes and into themselves.

Poetry as a gateway
Each session is anchored by a poem from history. The poetry opens a door, giving participants permission to connect honestly with themselves in a way that most professional settings don't allow.

Structured writing prompts
Participants write in response to prompts drawn from the poem, designed to surface real experiences, patterns, and insights. Stream-of-consciousness is encouraged. There is no wrong way to do this.

Sharing circle with safety guidelines
Participants are invited (never required) to share their writing aloud, followed by positive-only feedback. Our guidelines for psychological safety to create this meaningful team experience.

Closing reflection
We end by asking: What is one thing you identified in this workshop that you're taking with you?
Workshop Themes

Every workshop is fully customized. Here are popular themes:

Writing for resilience and clarity in uncertain times
Process the disruption, change, and uncertainty your team and the world is navigating right now. Write through it and come out the other side with a renewed sense of purpose.

Authentic leadership
Reconnect with the experiences that shaped you as a leader. Find your courage and authentic voice to remain level-headed and honest with your teams during these times of global uncertainty.

Career clarity & evolution
Write about both the brightest and darkest moments of your career so far to rediscover your resilience and propel you forward. Adapt and define the next steps in your career evolution, grounded in self-knowledge.

Brand & business alignment
For founders and entrepreneurs: realign your business and brand with your authentic self. Scale your bright spots while strategically cutting out distractions to get you through these testing times.

Team connection & belonging
Help your team connect deeply with the humans beside them, discovering each other’s strengths and tools of support.

All workshops are available as standalone sessions, multi-week series (pod format), or as part of a larger retreat or conference.
